Antarctica Voyage 2009 #2

Antarctic Peninsula - Jan. 2009

  • Getting the chance to head back to Antarctica for a second time in a month was a dream come true. This time, I was invited on an expedition put on by Adventure Odyssey. The journey was lead by adventurers Peter Bland and Nik Halik. The trip included not only a fantastic journey to a vast frozen paradise but we also did plenty of kayaking, ice climbing, camping, wildlife watching and even a wedding!

  • Many thanks go out to Peter Bland and Nik Halik at Adventure Odyssey.

My transport, the Professor Multanovskiy reflected in the water, looking down from the bow.

The sun set for only a couple of hours each night.

I even attended a wedding in Antarctica! Here is Margaret and Peer, right after saying their vows. The ship captain came ashore to perform the ceremony.

Snow doesn't melt when it hits the frigid water, it collects to form grease ice.

    More breathtaking scenery.

The Humpbacks raise their tails when they go for a deep dive.

In the inflatable Zodiac boats, the whales can be approached quite closely.

Here I am, roped up with Nik Halik, looking for a place to set up camp for the night.

Piling up snow to build a snow cave.

The snow cave is about halfway finished now.

Home sweet home for the night. It took about 3 1/2 hours to construct and slept 4.

Happy to be back in Antarctica.

Myself and Nik Halik, enjoying home made vodka at the bar at Vernadsky research station. Not exactly what comes to mind when one thinks of Antarctica.
